Men tend to have less of a tolerance for internal pain than woman and seek to block it instead of talk about it. There are three major ways by which men attempt to escape depression: 1. overuse of alcohol and/or drugs; 2. working excessively; or 3. seeking extra marital affairs. Evidenced-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective treatments for depression.
Depressed men feel disconnected from their needs and also from others, which can sometimes cause them to isolate and can often become irritable or even violent.
RECONNECTION to self and others is the key to decreasing depression in men. If you or a loved one is showing signs of depression, it is a message that it is time to seek support. Therapy can help to alleviate shame and take a turn toward action so men can address the way depression is manifesting for them. The goal is to aid men to take control of their lives in a healthy and more productive way.
